Russell Bennett

Senior Associate

Russell Bennett is a senior associate in Cambridge LLP’s Business Litigation and Estate Litigation Groups, and co-leads the firm’s Insolvency & Restructuring practice alongside his father, Frank Bennett. He is a trusted advisor to clients navigating high-stakes disputes involving businesses, families, and fiduciary relationships.

Russell’s practice focuses on complex commercial and estate litigation, including shareholder and partnership disputes, insolvency matters such as receiverships and bankruptcies, joint venture breakdowns, construction and contract disputes, and the enforcement of judgments. In estate litigation, he advocates in wills challenges, estate and trust accountings, executor and trustee negligence claims, and power of attorney disputes, often where personal relationships and significant assets intersect.

Russell is known for his ability to quickly identify what truly matters in a dispute and to develop practical, results-focused strategies. He brings a disciplined, analytical approach to litigation, informed by his experience acting for business owners, professionals, and families in contentious and emotionally charged matters.

Before joining Cambridge LLP, Russell practised with his father, Frank Bennett, specializing in bankruptcy and insolvency litigation, worked on Bay Street with a fraud recovery firm acting for victims of fraud, and later founded and operated his own boutique law firm focused on cannabis business litigation, mediation, and regulatory matters. He is the author of Canada’s Cannabis Act: Annotation & Commentary (LexisNexis Canada), now in its seventh edition and widely regarded as a leading authority on federal cannabis law.

Russell also practised at a boutique condominium law firm, where he represented condominium owners, corporations, and stakeholders in governance and enforcement disputes.

Russell holds a B.Sc. in Biology from Western University, including an honours year in Environmental Studies at the University of Waterloo, and earned his LL.B. from the University of Windsor Faculty of Law, where he was recognized for academic excellence and community service. He is licensed to practise law in Ontario.

Outside the office, Russell’s family life is full, active, and never dull with his wife, Gillian, and their three children, usually in motion, often laughing, occasionally crying, but always together.
